CG interaction with the wave

Full CG Skyscraper in foreground

In 2019, MPC brought me on as CG Supervisor for what turned out to be a dream project—two weeks on location in Bali and Thailand. As someone who's been surfing for 20 years, the opportunity felt almost too good to be true. Working alongside one of my favorite directors, Matthijs Van Heijningen, the production company MJZ, and an exceptional crew made this an experience I won't forget.
During pre-production, I developed the VFX plan and visualized the shots, proposing creative solutions for how we'd approach the shoot.
On location, my responsibilities included:
Collaborating with the director to plan VFX shots and approve plates for our post-production team
Directing the second unit for 360-degree holograms
Operating my personal drone to capture additional pool party footage for the opening sequence
Shooting high-resolution environmental photography for reference plates, HDRI lighting, texture reference, and on-set documentation
Back at MPC, I supervised the team while also diving into hands-on work—developing Houdini FX simulations and handling lighting and lookdev.
The cherry on top? Fellow surfer Jake Nelson ran Flame and supervised compositing, helping us nail the final look.
